Re: Street Stud Tires
As many of you may or may not be aware late in the 2023 Ice Racing Season there was a meeting held in Minden On. by Tom Prentice regarding the continued deterioration of the track at the Minden Fairgrounds. The meeting was open for all to attend and was held on a Sunday morning.
The main topic of this meeting was the continued difficulty in building and maintaining the track due to climate changes and the use of the Black Rocket tires. As Tom noted, over the past several years the temperatures have become less consistent and ever changing making it difficult to build and maintain the track. To lessen the difficulties, it was strongly suggested that we move to a D.O.T. studded tire.
On March 4, 2023 the Annual Spring / Winter Ice Racing Meeting was held in Minden. At this meeting it was tabled that we move to a single brand D.O.T. spec tire. In a vote by those in attendance it was agreed we to move forward with a single brand D.O.T. spec tire.
We feel this decision will:
- Minimize the wear on the track over the course of the season.
- Allow for improved competition – everyone on equal footing.
- Allow for a more consistent track over the course of the season.
With that in mind and after much research and investigation it has been decided that for the 2024 Ice Racing Season and the foreseeable future, we will be using the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10.
Please note:
- Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV tires are not eligible.
- Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10 EV tires are not eligible.
- Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10 Run Flat tires are not eligible.
Some of the logic behind choosing the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10:
- Nokian is a well known / established tire company which specializes in winter tires
- The Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10 are readily available through several retail sources
- The Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10 uses some of the latest technology in studded tires.
- The Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10’s Double Stud Technology offers maximum performance as the Centre studs improve acceleration and braking grip, while the shoulder stud areas maximize the grip during turning.
