Ontario Regional Road Racing...There's
Nothing Like it Anywhere |
|
CASC Ontario Region organizes the province's road racing championships,
with wheel-to-wheel competition over Mosport's fast, rolling hills,
Shannonville's complex corner combinations, and Calabogie's
challenging mix of multi-apex corners and elevations.
Competition is divided between open-wheeled
Formula categories and closed-wheel Production
and GT categories.

OBTAINING A
RACE DRIVING LICENCE
Membership in a CASC Ontario Region affiliated
club is required for road racing competition. Most of the event
schedule's hosting clubs have a majority of members involved
in racing themselves, and will gladly answer your questions. Your
club remains a valuable source of support, information and advice.
You must also pass an authorized racing course. Proof of graduation,
a completed CASC Ontario Region licence application (including a
physical examination and medical form completed and signed by your
doctor), and a photocopy of your club membership card must then
be sent to the region office, along with the licencing fee.
CHOOSING A RACE DRIVING SCHOOL
Both amateur and professional racing schools are available in the
region. Amateur schools are run by the Motorsport
Club of Ottawa, and cost approximately $600. Your road car is
usually sufficient for these schools, which are held one to two
times each season. Professional schools such as the Bridgestone
Racing School provide fully prepared race cars, and all required
safety equipment and supplies.
Your racing school experience influences how much
you enjoy early racing weekends. It is hard to appreciate the difference
between driving fast and racing until you learn the finer techniques
of wheel-to-wheel competition.
SAFETY CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT
Racing involves risk. Acquiring, wearing, and maintaining personal
safety equipment protects you and safeguards our ASN master insurance
policy, which makes Ontario motorsport possible. Consult the rulebook,
talk to experienced competitors, and compare prices and quality
at race suppliers like Newmarket's CSC
Racing Products. A fire retardant racing suit, socks, gloves,
balaclava and shoes are required by the rules. Their selection,
use and care are equally as important. Road racing helmets must be rated
'SA' (Special Application), and have dates (i.e. SA2010) to indicate
the standard to which they¹re built; again, consult the rulebook.
FIELDING A RACE CAR
CASC Ontario Region's rulebook covers safety items (roll cage construction,
belt anchor points, etc.) as well as vehicle weights, wheelbase
and track dimensions, and performance modifications. Once again,
your club is an excellent resource for locating a race car. Consider
renting a ride from a competitor or prep shop until you locate a
car of your own. Consult the Ontario
Region forums, racing magazines and newspapers like Performance
Racing News and Inside
Track Motorsport News for local racing action and classifieds
for cars, trailers and trucks. Cars are closely scrutinized before
events, and only those vehicles that meet these standards are allowed
to compete. If you are mechanically inclined, you might choose to
prepare your car yourself; if not, there several professional shops
that can help you. |
PRODUCTION
AND GT CATEGORIES |
The Ontario GT Sprints are an open GT series.
Cars are scored in GT1 through GT6 classes, bracketed according to
lap time, and run three twenty-minute races per weekend. In some cases the six classes are divided into two race groups while in others all six race simultaneously while being
scored for their respective classes. The GT Sprints accomodate a wide
variety of cars based on series-produced models, including tubeframed
'silhouette' cars and stockers. Tire choices and modifications are
open, reducing cost for several 'run-what-you-brung' competitors,
and drivers may also share cars during the weekend to split costs. |
 |
GT Challenge is a new for 2010 endurance GT series.
Cars are classed in the same GT1 through GT6 classes as GT Sprints but the races themselves are between one and three hours in length. Pit stops are mandatory with refuelling required during the longer races, introducing an element of strategy into the competition. Drivers may share cars during the race to split costs. |
 |
Group 70+ is the home of the next generation of vintage racing
cars. The group features original and period-prepared race cars from
the late '70's to late '80's era. As with fully fledged vintage and
historic racing, stringent sanctions on contact and off-track excursions
are enforced in '13/13' style.

The Ontario
Formula Ford Challenge is Ontario's premier formula
racing category. The class has been a longtime favourite both with
amateurs and pro racing hopefuls, and the cars provide an intense
racing experience for relatively reasonable cost. The lightweight
cars often range from $10,000 to $20,000 in cost, attaining lap
times under 1m 30s at Mosport.

 |
Ontario's F1200 (Vee) championship has enjoyed good grids thanks to the efforts of the Formula
1200 Driver's Association. F1200 is a class of single seat open wheel race cars which utilize many components from the venerable VW Beetle to keep costs down. The class appeals to karting graduates
and sportsmen alike with close competition.

|
Formula
Libre is open to all open wheel single-seaters as well as lightweight
sports racers, providing some of the fastest competition in Ontario.
A true 'run what you brung' series, Libre commonly sees competition
between Canadian-built Formula Fours, Radical Sports Racers, Formula 2000, and even Formula Mazda or Formula Renault cars.
